Where can you stay during your weekend seminar?

Where can you stay during your classes if you are from out of town/state/country and don’t know the area? Let us help you.

Hollywood, North Hollywood, Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles, all close together, yet not, and kind of a scary place in certain areas if you are not used to it, so let us give everything we know, from the bargain to the 5-star places, so you can choose whatever fits you and your budget with as little effort as possible.

Local Accommodations

It is possible for a reasonable investment to see Hollywood and meet the Hollywood execs of your dreams through our seminars.Our students travel from across the country and around the world, so Sherwood Oaks is pleased to offer this list of affordable, comfortable hotels situated in the heart of the film industry’s capital city!

There are some things to keep in mind about this area;

  1. If you are considering renting a vehicle if you are from out of the area, it may be easier to get around without one. Traffic is a bear, and trying to drive even short distances can take a very long time…and also, PARKING is either premium, or non-existent.
  2. If you are trying to save money, you may find better prices, especially if you are flying in from another state or country, to use one of the travel websites that put together packages for you. If you purchase your air-fare, lodging, and rentals all at the same time, you can probably save more money. Check websites like, Orbitz, Priceline, Expedia
  3. And if you are just looking for a Hotel booking site, don’t forget Trivago!   There is also a newer site called Agoda that has even lower rates than Trivago.

This page covers:

    • Accommodations from Free to
    • Luxury
    • Transportation
    • Meals
    • Car Rentals

If you are frugal, you can spend about $69 a day for food, sleeping and transportation.
Invest in your dream!

I love Airbnb (or if on your phone, get the APP) especially if you are on a budget since you get the biggest bang for the buck and often get access to a kitchen (but be sure to inquire.)  There are three things to know before staying at an Airbnb.

  1. Most hosts will only let guests stay at their home if they have a positive reviews from other hosts so you usually need to have a positive profile before you go;
  2. Always ask about private parking and if they say street parking then realize that it is unlikely that there will be street parking after 6 pm (see our notes about skipping the car rental); and
  3. Inexpensive places in LA below $60 a night tend to be dormitory style and can be chaotic and eye opening.  Often times, there will be bunk-beds and room-share with 5+ people in one room (they will typically say shared room).   In addition, these dormitories rarely have lockers so do not leave valuables.  Clothing is usually never taken, however, food and sometimes cigarettes have gone missing.

Other Important Things To Remember!

Traffic – Give Yourself Extra Time

Always give yourself EXTRA time for traffic, during rush hour double the time. The traffic in ALL of southern California is HORRIBLE and there is nothing you can do about it except PLAN for it. (sorry)

Accommodations – Closer is Always Better

Avoid traffic by getting accommodation (hotel/room) that is within 1 to 3 miles from the meeting location usually Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Burbank (for studios), or Santa Monica.   Hollywood is best.  It is worth avoiding the traffic headache.

Transportation – Skip the Car Rental

Unless you have planned meetings or are visiting a friend off the beaten track, we do NOT recommend a car rental.  It’s expensive and often difficult to park.   We recommend a shuttle or public transportation if one person especially if you are on a budget. If there are 2 or more, then use Lyft or Uber and share the ride cost, or ride share.  Obtain your accommodation close to transportation junctions if possible (bus/train stations) The subway (Metrolink) is great for getting around in LA and the busses aren’t bad either. If you are FLYING in, consider taking the flyaway out of LAX.
